CURRICULUM INTENT FOR FRENCH

By learning a foreign language, our pupils are exposed to a liberation of insularity which in turn helps them to recognise that people of different nationalities and cultures communicate in languages other than English, both across the globe and within their own community. They foster curiosity as well as developing a passion for communication, linked to their oracy in English, and build on their natural desire to communicate clearly with everyone. Through learning spoken and written French, our pupils learn how to develop an understanding of a new language, and how they might apply this to learning in any foreign language.  It deepens their understanding of the world and helps them to value diversity band a rich understand of our multi-cultural world.

It is intended that when pupils leave Heckington St. Andrew’s they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages accepting that it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively.

Implementation

In KS2, teachers use the progression documents to plan weekly lessons that build and develop oral and written French. Technology is used to model pronunciation. Teachers consult with the subject leader if they wish to vary the curriculum. The planning in other subjects continues to intentionally reinforce the language cognates and links between English and other languages. Teachers speak French when giving common instructions in class, and pupils are encouraged to respond in French.

Teachers in all Key Stages celebrate the diversity of languages within their class, and where pupils already speak another language routinely encourage them to share words and phrases that enable everyone to communicate in their other language. Diversity of language is celebrated and promoted around school both in writing and orally.
